A Study on the Levels of Nutrition in Korea

Abstract
Main contents of this study are the annual change of the levels of nutrition and social-economic status which have influenced on the nutritive intake in Korea in the sixties. The results are¡¦¡¦
1. The population as of the end of year in Korea was about 25 million in 1960, and about 32 million in 1970. And the population density per sq. Km. was 253.7 in 1960, and 325 in 1970.
2. The increase rate of population was 245 ¡¾0.45%, and sex ratio of male to female was 100.9 ¡¾0.6, from 1960 to 1970.
3. Per capita Gross National Products was $96.1 in 1962, and $223.0 in 1970. And Per capita National Income was $83.6 in 1962, and $ 187.3 in 1970.
4. Ratio of food and beverages expenditure to private consumption expenditure was 59.1¡¾3.8%, in the sisties.
5. The agricultural production was irregular through natural phenomeana.
6. The total carried fleight tannage was about 40 million in 1963, and about 100 million in 1970. And the composition of fleight transport by railroad is on the decrease, but that of by highway and shipping is on the increase.
7. The cereals. potatoes, fish and shells showed to have been supplied sufficiently, and pulse and nuts, vegetables and fruit, fats and oils, meat, milk, and sugar showed to have been supplied deficiently in comparison to World food supply targets.
8. The consumption of milk, fats and oils, and sugar was highly increased, from 1962 to 1968.
9. The average nutrient intake per caput per day in Korea has been increased "quantitatively" in regard to the total amount of calories (from 2,234 cal in 1962 to 2,581 cal in 1968), protein (from 69.2g in 1962 to 72.9g in 1968) and fat (from 18.0g in 1962 to 21.5g on 1968), but it has been decreased "qualitatively" in regard to the protein calorie percent (from 12.4% in 1962 to 11.3% 1968), percent of calories derived from animal food to total calorie intake (from 5.5% in 1962 to 5.2% in 1968) and ratio of animal protein to total protein (from 16.8% in 1962 to 16.0% in 1968). Specifically, the animal protein intake per caput per day in Korea from 1962 to 1968 was 11.6 ¡¾0.5g, lagging far behind 23g¡28g of World animal protein targets.
10. The total calorie intake in Korea in 1968 was superior to in Japan or in Taiwan. But animal protein intake in Korea was lagging far behind in Western developed countries. it is because the level of per capita National Income in Korea is low.
11. Above mentioned findings of this study accounted for that we should be more interested in "qualitative unbalance", specifically. animal protein intake rather than "quantitative deficiency" in nutrition problem in Korea.
